Summer 2008

Beginning June 24, Wassookeag offers a summer camp meeting from Tuesdays 10 to 4, including crafts, field trips, and optional Friday afternoons at Lucerne Lake. Cost for the day is $20 per child, payable on the day of attendance. For more information, contact us via more info above.

Global Art Project completed

April 2008

After months of design, building, and painting, Wassookeag's contribution to the Global Art Project--an enormous globe covered with continents and creatures--is finally complete. Coordinated by parent John "Atlas" Picone, the Global Art Project was exhibited at Orono's Hope Festival last April.

This spring, Joline Blais has organized four permaculture workshops with U-Me and a trip to Bangor's Everlasting Farm, Debby Bell-Smith toured the U-Me Arboretum, and Isis Bell began a sunflower house at LongGreenHouse.

Fencing begins!

February 2008

Under the direction of Wassookeag parent and former Harvard fencer Jon Ippolito, Wassookeagers have started learning the noble art of sabre, once described as "chess at lightning speed." Lessons take place Tuesday afternoons this spring, though we are also hoping to hook up on Mondays with Wassookeag alumnus and local fencing celebrity Nicholas Kaye.

Abbe Museum tour shows art through Native eyes

Wabanaki elder gkisedtanamoogk leads a guided tour of the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island, where Wassookeag students compare Native cultures from the Northeast and Southwest as represented in the artifacts on display in the Journeys West exhibition.

Students and parents learn about sustainable farming and building techniques and learn about starting their own businesses from Wassookeag alumni at the annual Common Ground Fair in Unity, Maine.

Permaculture workshop transforms LongGreenHouse

In a two-day workshop organized by Still Water and ESTIA, Australian sustainable design experts Julia and Charles Yelton and their students build two LongGreenHouses, swale 120 running feet for terraced gardens, and reclaim overgrown parts of the LongGreenHouse yard for future gardening and meditative walks.

Indigenous Media class starts

U-Me's Indigenous Media class meets for the first time at LongGreenHouse, where gkisedtanamoogk and Joline Blais lead a discussion on what it means to be indigenous. Wassookeag students are invited to attend the dinner afterward on site.

Wassookeag opens with Permaculture activities

4 September 2007

The Wassookeag home school meets for the first day in its new location at LongGreenHouse and set up desks, a treehouse, and lots of books and other learning aids.

Later in the day, Australian sustainable design experts Julia and Charles Yelton join Emily Markides and Joline Blais's Permaculture class for their first on-site visit to LongGreenHouse. During a tour through the local grounds, the class discusses Permaculture principles and begins the process of re-imagining the nearby landscape. After class, the college students and adults are treated to a dinner prepared by the grade-school age kids of Wassookeag, made of local organic produce from the nearby Orono farmer's market.

Wabanaki elders in residence

Wabanaki elders Miigam'agan and gkisedtanamoogk officially take up residence at LongGreenHouse along with their family. They will be contributing to the eldership training of young people as part of the Wassookeag home school community.
